A casino in Muskegon can benefit the communities of the area in many ways. The majority of the Muskegon property purchased by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians will provide tax payments in the exact same amounts as non-tribal businesses, and the local property taxes paid by the casino location itself will be more than triple the amount of taxes paid by the former race track.
The property surrounding the casino will be used for non-tribal purposes, such as for national chain restaurants, hotels, and retail outlets.... all of which will provide jobs, tax payments, and tourists to our local economy.
This project began several years ago when the LRBOI tribal government looked at development in its southern tribal territory. The plan is to develop a casino at the former Great Lakes Downs racetrack site in Fruitport Township to provide jobs and economic development in Muskegon County along with year-round tourism. A casino there is expected to generate more than 1,100 jobs, resulting in a $400 million investment.
The tribe is planning to place 60 acres of its 233-acre site in Fruitport Township in a “trust” for casino development. The rest of the property will be used for hotel, restaurants, stores and entertainment venues.
Little River Band of Ottawa Indians will work with the Fruitport Township Planning Commission to ensure the casino development fits the needs, character, & desires of the Township and the local community.
The Fruitport Casino will draw upon existing amenities in Fruitport Township and Muskegon County.
